Love thy neighbour

Walking home with a friend last night from my neighbourhood, after attending a talk with the responsible tourism community, inspired a conversation about the different organisations and people that leave their countries of origin to go overseas to help to ‘make a difference’ to people’s lives in other countries. I’ve been to a couple talks this weeks with UK and US based organisations that focus on helping other countries to change either through finance or knowledge of the ‘right’ way to do things.

There is no doubt that many organisations and people do great work, but I sometimes ask myself why do we feel the need to travel half way around the world to be ‘nice’ to someone when there are so many people on our doorstep who we could show a little more care and consideration to. Would this not help to make the world a better place too?
